![]() | Here you will find the most comprehensive Phil Collins pre-FM Live Radio Show Transcriptions and pre-FM Radio Interview Guide available. This is similar to and inspired by David Dunnington's Complete Guide to Live Genesis Radio Shows, which can be found HERE. Having been a massive fan of both Phil Collins and Genesis since I was a teenager, and having been a collector of live concert bootlegs from those artists (and others) since about 2006, I have found Dave's Radio Guide to be most helpful. The only problem is that Dave's work centered specifically on Genesis radio shows and not the supporting bandmates. I have searched for and never found a similar guide for Phil Collins shows, so I decided to create one of my own. The shows listed on this page are all pre-FM sourced shows, either on vinyl LPs or compact discs, as I've always had a fondness for those old King Biscuit Flower Hour and Westwood One radio shows. What makes these shows so unique is that they were sent to radio stations across the United States with the express instructions that they were to be destroyed or returned after one airplay. Many were not returned or destroyed, but most were. Those that were not have found their way into private collections over the years. Thus there exists a limited supply of these pre-FM shows, especially on vinyl. (Dave's Guide has much more information about these type of shows, so please check out his page. In addition, for the most extensive list of live Genesis related material ever compiled, please visit Simon Funnel's fantastic Genesis Movement website, where you will find everything you ever wanted to know about the band and its members, along with links to Torrents of most - if not all - of the shows listed here.) With that in mind, it was my ultimate goal to make THIS PAGE as complete as possible to include all of the known pre-FM recordings of Phil Collins solo radio concerts and interview shows. After several years of collecting, I can attest that that goal has now been achieved. I have also listed all of the known Genesis radio interview specials as well, as these are not included on Dave's list, at the bottom of the page. I am choosing to leave out the FM broadcasts and simulcasts (with the exception of two notable concerts, one from 1985's NO JACKET REQUIRED TOUR and one from 1990's BUT SERIOUSLY TOUR) because those shows are catalogued in extensive detail over on Simon's site, and to list them here would simply be redundant. All live shows are organized within each Tour and then listed in the order of their ORGINAL AIRDATE, not their recording date. In fact, in the case of most of the interview specials, the recording date is unknown. I have listed every show that I have knowledge of, and have copies of almost all of them in my personal collection, however, if you have any information on any pre-FM Phil Collins live concert radio broadcasts or interview specials not already listed here, please email me at toprotectandserveall@gmail.com so that I may add them to this Guide. Where applicable, you can view scans of the radio show Cue Sheets by clicking the ![]() ![]() ![]() Lastly, a word of thanks to Simon Funnell for his wonderfully extensive Genesis Movement website and for his tireless work over at the Genesis Movement Torrent website. Enjoy! CONTENTS:
ABC Rock Radio Networks Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - Week of 16 April 1983 pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP Set They say you never forget your first, and this show captured Phil live in all his glory on his first solo outing. This is the earliest known radio show from Phil's first solo tour, and while that is the case, this set was one of the last that I picked up for my collection. The performance was recorded at the same venue in conjunction with video that was captured and edited down for release on VHS and Laserdisc, however, no DVD or Blu-ray release has ever materialized. (Scans of the VHS cover, Laserdisc cover and Laserdisc label from my personal collection appear below.) Contains original DJ introductions by Pat St. John, original commercial blocks, and a version of Phil's lengthy band introductions which - except for the below listed Warner Theater show Captured Live! #CL-783 - does not appear on future recordings from this tour. Blistering versions of I Don't Care Anymore, The West Side, Hand In Hand and In The Air Tonight highlight this show in addition to the rarely played Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away. Nice rare set to have, one which captures a show that was ultimately far less reproduced than the following show from The Warner Theatre later in this same tour. As was usually the case, this recording does not contain the complete performance from that night. For the remainder of this page, any recording which did not capture the complete performance for a given night will be listed with "Incomplete capture" in the narrative. From my personal collection. RKO Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 Original Airdate - Week of 27 June 1983 pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP Set Yellow Label / Cue Sheet Version Recorded on the final night of the tour, this vinyl set is the earliest incarnation of this particular radio show available on LP. It is an extremely rare and hard to find set, the value of which keeps increasing. The crowd sound on this one is a bit "muffled" compared to other versions of this concert, which I list below, but it is still an amazing set to own. Contains original DJ introductions by Perry Stone, however, there are no commercial blocks on this set which is unlike future pre-FM vinyl releases. Interestingly, this show also contains a recording of Phil's lengthy band introductions, which doesn't ever appear on any future recordings of the show. In addition this set's running order is far closer to the actual setlist than any future releases of this show. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. ABC Rock Radio Networks Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - Week of 24 July 1983 pre-FM Double Vinyl LP Set Much like the below listed King Biscuit #02-20 show, this recording CLAIMS to be from The Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (which occurred on 10 December 1982) and even includes Phil saying "Good evening, Philadelphia!" in the first segment. Phil further mentions this being the evening show from that venue, however, the audio from most of the actual songs is clearly from the Perkins Palace show. We know that the Biscuit recorded both the early and late shows at The Tower Theatre on this tour as evidenced by their existence over at the Wolfgang's Concert Vault website, (head HERE and search "Phil Collins" to hear those shows) however, this show is not from that venue. The song order on this one is bit jumbled, with I Missed Again being the first live track on Side A, and I Don't Care Anymore starting off Side B. Contains original commercial blocks and intros by King Biscuit regular contributor Bill Minkin. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. Complete track listing HERE. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
ABC Rock Radio Networks Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 and The Montreal Forum, Montreal, Canada - Unknown Date Original Airdate - Week of 4 December 1983 pre-FM Double Vinyl LP Set This recording also CLAIMS to be from The Tower Theatre, however, the audio from most of the actual songs during Phil's set is from the Perkins Palace show. This is a trimmed down "best of" show, so not all songs are presented here. Chris de Burgh's set was recorded at the Montreal Forum on an unknown/unlisted date. Phil's portion of the show takes up Sides A & B, with de Burgh's portion relegated (as it should be) to Side C. Side D is blank on this set. Contains original commercial blocks and intros by King Biscuit regular contributor Bill Minkin. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. TBS Syndications Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - Unknown Month/Day 1983 pre-FM Single Vinyl LP This show was released to Telemedia-owned Canadian radio stations in 1983 for broadcast following Phil's first solo tour. The records falsely claim to have been recorded in Central Park, New York, however, Phil did not play any concerts at this location during the tour in question. A quick listen reveales the show to have been recorded at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, California. There are at least two versions of this show, Hour No. 4 and Hour No. 14. (See below for scans and links regarding Hour No. 14.) Contains DJ introductions by Pat St. John, but no commercial blocks. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. Complete track listing for Hour No. 4 HERE. ![]() ![]()
TBS Syndications Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - Unknown Month/Day 1983 pre-FM Single Vinyl LP The second such release, similar to the above listing. (See above for scans and links regarding Hour No. 4.) Contains DJ introductions by Pat St. John, but no commercial blocks. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. Complete track listing for Hour No. 14 HERE. ![]() ![]()
RKO Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 Original Airdate - Week of 14 May 1984 pre-FM Quadruple Vinyl LP Set Blue Label / Cue Sheet Version This set contains some of the same material as listed in the Captured Live! show above, reproduced and repackaged for airing in May of 1984. This show DOES NOT contain the following songs, which ARE featured in the other Captured Live! incarnation of this show, CL 783: This Must Be Love, Thru These Walls, You Know What I Mean, The Roof Is Leaking and The West Side, consequently, the total running time on this version is 51:31, whereas the running time for CL 783 A-D is 81:45. Therefore, this is a reduced performance from an already incomplete capture. The interesting thing about this set is that it comes on four vinyl LPs. The first two LPs contain the show with host Jim Ladd, and the second set comes "unhosted", allowing local radio DJ's to produce their own version of the show. Incomplete capture. Westwood One Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 Original Airdate - Week of 28 July 1984 pre-FM Translucent Triple Vinyl LP Set This show was completely unknown to me until it recently popped up on eBay. Prior to that, I was only aware of the three Warner Theatre captures which are listed below. This concert, again from the final night of Phil's first solo tour, was recorded and produced on pre-FM vinyl LPs at least four times between 1984 and 1985 under the Superstars Concert Series banner, utilizing show numbers #SS84-15 (this show), #SS84-25, #SS85-10 and #SS85-26. This set, like the following three, contains the same tracks as the aforementioned Captured Live! #CL-783 show, (with the exception of the Band Introductions, which appears on Captured Live! #CL-783 but not on this set) but in a slightly different running order. Also, not quite as rare as Captured Live! #CL-783, but still much harder to find than #SS85-26. (Again, until just recently, I had never seen this particular version of this show available anywhere, and therefore did not know of its existence.) The performance is one of Phil's best from this tour, and it definitely leaves the listener wanting more. In particular, the versions of Hand In Hand and And So To F... (which is misidentified as "In Soto F" on all four of the #SS Cue Sheets) are blazing hot. Both tracks highlight Phil's thunderous drum skills along with Mo Foster's thumping, popping, badass bass lines. This is the one show that makes me wish I had a time machine so that I could go back and see it for myself! (I've actually seen Mark Knopfler and his band twice at this same venue, and both times I imagined what it must have been like to be there for THIS show.) The sound on all four of the Superstar Concert Series shows is much "brighter" than the Captured Live! #CL-783 version of this show, with the ambient audience noise much more present and loud. Contains original commercial blocks and DJ introductions by Phil Henry. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. Westwood One Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 Original Airdate - Week of 15 December 1984 pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP Set The second of at least four versions of this show under the Superstars Concert Series banner, this is a repackaged version of #SS84-15, with the exact same musical content, set for airing in December of 1984 instead of July of that same year. Westwood One Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 Original Airdate - Week of 15 December 1984 pre-FM Double Reel-To-Reel Set This is a very special version of this show, the contents of which are exactly the same as the vinyl LP version, however, this set was released on 7" reel-to-reel tape. To date, this is the only Phil Collins show that I have found on reel-to-reel tape, though I am sure there must be more. Incomplete capture. Westwood One Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 Original Airdate - Week of 22 June 1985 pre-FM Translucent Triple Vinyl LP Set Exact same show as #SS84-15, #SS84-25 and #SS85-26, but repackaged for airing in June of 1985. The third of at least four versions of this show under the Superstars Concert Series banner, this version is very hard to find, but contains the same tracks as listed above and below. Contains original commercial blocks and DJ introductions by Charlie Kendall. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. Westwood One Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 Original Airdate - Week of 28 December 1985 pre-FM Translucent Triple Vinyl LP Set Exact same show as #SS84-15, #SS84-25 and #SS85-10, but repackaged for airing in December of 1985. The fourth of at least four versions of this show under the Superstars Concert Series banner. For some reason, this seems to be the more popular (or at least more readily available) version of the show as it frequently pops up on eBay. That said, I prefer the earlier incarnation of Captured Live! #CL-783 and #SS84-15 for this date and venue as they are the more rare versions available. (For me, the "rareness" of the LPs makes them more appealing for some reason!) Contains original commercial blocks and DJ introductions by Charlie Kendall. Incomplete capture. ABC Rock Radio Networks Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - Week of 23 May 1986 pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP Set Like the above listed King Biscuit pre-FM Vinyl Transfer from 1983, this recording also CLAIMS to be from The Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (which occurred on 10 December 1982) , however, the audio of the actual songs is clearly from the Perkins Palace show. There is even the customary fade-in during And So To F... Contains original commercial blocks and DJ introductions by King Biscuit regular contributor Bill Minkin. Incomplete capture. King Biscuit Radio Corporation Records Recorded live at The Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C. - 20 February 1983 and Unknown Venue, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada - Unknown Date Original Airdate - Week of 26 October 1992 pre-FM Single Compact Disc Like the above listed King Biscuit pre-FM Vinyl Transfer from 1983, this recording also CLAIMS to be from The Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (which occurred on 10 December 1982) and even includes Phil saying "Good evening, Philadelphia!" after I Don't Care Anymore, however, the audio of the actual songs is clearly from the Perkins Palace show. (There are currently at least five different KBFH pre-FM CDs available with varying tracklists, featuring most of the show between them.) Two songs by Tom Cochrane (former lead singer of the band Red Rider) are included at the end of the show under the "Future Classic Artist" moniker, however, the venue is not mentioned, only that it was recorded in Red Deer. King Biscuit Radio Corporation Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - Week of 6-12 December 1999 pre-FM Single Compact Disc Another recording from Phil's first solo tour, this one captured at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, California near the end of the tour. The host, Ed Sciaky (pronounced Shockey) claims at the top of the show that this concert is from 1986, however, Phil did not do a solo tour at any point in 1986 as he was touring with Genesis at that time. As previously noted, there are currently at least five different KBFH pre-FM CDs available with varying tracklists, featuring most of the Perkins Palace show between them. King Biscuit Radio Corporation Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - Week of 13 April 2002 pre-FM Single Compact Disc This is a nearly identical set list as the above listed King Biscuit show featuring tracks from Tom Cochrane, except this recording does not contains the final song of This Must Be Love, nor does it inclued any tracks from Cochrane. Note that the Cue Sheet indicates that the show aired in May of 2002 while the actual discs states April of that year. Contains original commercial blocks and DJ introductions by Marc Coppolla. Unknown Canadian Broadcasting Comapny Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - February 2011 pre-FM Double Compact Disc This is a strange listing on eBay claiming to be sourced form a Canadian radio program called Classic Concert of Rock. The listing states that this is a two hour / two CD show featuring an archive performance from Phil. The provided Cue Sheet does list commercials which are included, but the whole listing smacks of being a fake item. My guess is this is some sort of bootleg copy on CD-R, but without having this item in my collection (and I didn't want to buy it because it was listed for over $45) I can't be sure of its authenticity. Incomplete capture. ![]()
Jourdisc Europe Recorded live at Congresgebouw, The Hague, Holland - 11 November 1982 Double Vinyl LP Set There are also two unofficial audience bootleg recordings which captured shows from Phil's first solo tour. While these are NOT pre-FM radio shows, I am including them here because they are the only known PC boots on vinyl. Phil started his first solo tour with two performances (an early show and a late show) on 11 November 1982 at the Congresgebouw in Holland. The second show from that day was captured and released as this double vinyl LP set. The sound is muffled, the speed is slightly sped up and the packaging is... shall we say... unique. That said, this is only one of two known PC bootlegs on vinyl, so it deserves a place in this list. It also does appear that this is a complete capture of the entire performance from that night. King Toot Records Recorded live at Perkins Palace, Pasadena, California - 19 December 1982 Original Airdate - March 1984 Double Vinyl LP Set This set is the second PC bootleg to surface, and it's an odd one. It's also not at all a radio program but actually a bootleg of the Perkins Palace show on vinyl. The quality is such that the tracks leave a lot to be desired as it sounds more like a recording of a poorly sourced FM broadcast transferred to vinyl. Either way, it's an extremely rare set and hard to find, thus I felt it deserved inclusion here. The company that produced this bootleg copy intentionally misspelled Phil's first name as Phille, and further printed labels on the LPs suggesting Big Band music as a means to avoid detection of their bootleg activities. The "original airdate" as I have listed it above is derived from the back of the album sleeve which states: Calif. March, 1984. I actually believe that this date is meant to suggest the recording date, however, we know that Phil's first solo tour was over by February of 1983. In fact, by March of 1984, Genesis had already completed a huge world tour in support of their 1983 self-titled (aka MAMA) album; a tour which began in November of 1983 and finished up on 29 February 1984. Therefore, this date cannot be the actual recording date, thus I chose to list it as a possible broadcast date. Of course, this could also just be the release date of the LP set itself. Regardless of this, investigation into the actual tracks reveals them to have been recorded at Perkins Palace in December 1982. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. D.I.R. Broadcasting Corporation / ABC Rock Radio Network Records Recorded Live at The Summit, Houston, Texas, The Frank Erwin Center, Austin, Texas and The Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas - 20/21/22 September 1983 Original Airdate - Part I: 29 January 1984 / Part II: 5 February 1984 pre-FM Quadruple Vinyl LP Set A four album, two-part set of vinyl broadcast discs recorded over the course of three nights in Texas. Phil played drums on this short tour. No artwork as such exists as the album covers were plain white since the set was meant to be played once for broadcast and then discarded. Extremely rare and hard to find. (There is actually a Seller on eBay who was asking $5,500 for each part of the set!) Contains original commercial blocks and DJ introductions by King Biscuit regular contributor, Bill Minkin. This is the only known professional recording in existence from this brilliant tour. Incomplete capture. While I don't have this vinyl set in my personal collection, I do have a copy which includes the Cue Sheets and LP labels featured below. Home Box Office (HBO) Cable TV Broadcast and FM Stereo Simulcast Recorded live at The Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas - 29 May 1985 Original Airdate - 28 September 1985 FM Stereo Simulcast While this Guide has primarily focused on pre-FM versions of Phil's performances, (and will continue to do so) I feel this FM simulcast and the next one listed below should be added as they are excellent documentations of what it's like to attend a Phil Collins concert. As mentioned above, there are no pre-FM recordings from this tour, which I find very confusing given Phil's popularity at the time. In 1985, Phil was at the height of his fame and very much in the public eye, having just released his most successful album to date, NO JACKET REQUIRED, (released on 18 February 1985) having filmed an episode for the hit television series MIAMI VICE, (although that episode wouldn't air until December of 1985) and having just completed a massive tour with Genesis. (All this BEFORE his much talked about, two continent hopping LIVE AID performances, which you can view pictures of below!) In fact, this lack of material in pre-FM form is even harder to digest when one considers the fact that both the King Biscuit and Westwood One companies recorded performances by Genesis on their 1983/84 and 1986/87 tours, which bookended Phil's '85 outings. (Shows at the Philadelphia Spectrum and the Los Angeles Forum were recorded and sent to radio stations on vinyl during the MAMA tour, and shows at the Los Angeles Forum were captured and produced during the INVISIBLE TOUCH tour, copies of which can be found on LP and later on compact discs.) So the idea that said labels would choose to completely ignore the NO JACKET tour is unfathomable. It appears that the closest thing to a professional recording of a show from this tour is the official VHS release PHIL COLLINS: NO TICKET REQUIRED, which captured a portion of the show from The Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas. This video originated as an HBO special, directed by Jim Yukich and produced by Paul Flattery, and was originally entitled NO JACKET REQUIRED... SOLD OUT. The broadcast was later released on VHS with extended footage and the title changed to PHIL COLLINS: NO TICKET REQUIRED. It won a Cable Ace Award for best TV Music special in 1986, and was simulcast in stereo via radio stations in the United States at that time of its original airing. It later turned up as a DVD version released in Brazil. (A scan of the VHS cover and the Brazilian DVD release from my personal collection appear below.) The original broadcast date, as listed, is derived from a magazine promotional advertisement produced by Westwood One. (You can view a picture of this ad using the first link below.) While HBO did broadcast songs from this night, their broadcast is incomplete and only lasted one hour. Obviously, since the show did not run until September of that year, the broadcast and simulcast did not occur live as it happened. HBO simply recorded the entire performance, then edited it down for broadcast and simulcast at a later date. I do recall watching and even recording both the HBO broadcast and the FM stereo simulcast, but those tapes are long since lost. Incomplete capture. King Biscuit Radio Corporation Records Recorded live at Unknown Venues / Dates Original Airdate - Week of 13 December 1987 pre-FM Single Compact Disc Aside from the King Biscuit Genesis special from 1987 (which included tracks from the famous L.A. Forum show on the Invisible Touch Tour and can be found HERE) this disc is one of my most coveted possessions. Originally broadcast in 1987, I still have the cassette tape which I used to record this show. I finally found the original transcription disc on eBay, and snatched it up right away. The show brings together Collins, Chrissie Hynde and David Gilmour for a radio special which highlights live performances from the three artists separate from their respective bands. The Collins tracks (Inside Out, Who Said I Would?, You Can't Hurry Love and It Don't Matter To Me) appear to have been culled from the above listed Dallas show as well as Perkins Palace from 1982, but the venues are never revealed by series regular Bill Minkin. Of note is the fact the the disc itself lists all three artists on the face, however, Gilmour's name is misspelled as Gilmore. Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. Pay-Per-View Cable TV Broadcast and KRQR Radio San Francisco, California FM Stereo Simulcast Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York - 2 October 1990 Original Airdate - 2 October 1990 FM Stereo Simulcast Simulcast across the U.S. on numerous FM radio stations on the final night of the BUT SERIOUSLY WORLD TOUR, this concert was simultaneously broadcast as a Pay-Per-View special. While there has been some confusion about the exact date of this concert, some believing it was actually 3 October 1990 in part because Phil's own website listed that date, it has been confirmed through multiple sources - of which I am one - that the exact show date was 2 October 1990. Partial confirmation came in the form of the notes I took on the night of the recording, which I dated as 2 October 1990. I wrote this date directly onto the VHS tape and audio cassette tapes which I used to capture the performance. In addition, I have attached a scan below of a Rolling Stone magazine article written about this exact show, and said article clearly states the date as 2 October. (The article itself is rather stained and torn, as I had it for many years hanging on my wall.) Unlike my lost NO JACKET REQUIRED... SOLD OUT HBO tapes, I still have the aforementioned cassette tapes and VHS tape copy of this show in my archives, which I recorded live as they were broadcast. (I capturd the FM simulcast of this show from my local radio station in Maryland, where I lived at the time, but for this listing I am referencing the KRQR station broadcast out of San Francisco as it is the clearest and best sounding of the available copies.) The entire concert was captured as it happened, warts and all, though few mistakes occurred. Phil and his "Ten Serious Guys and One Even More Serious Gal" as they were known on this tour really tore up the Garden that night (figuratively, not literally) and this recording showcases that. I feel that this performance far outshines the official release recorded in Berlin on this same tour. Highlights include the show opener Hand In Hand along with The West Side which features a smoldering drum solo, Colours with a drum duet featuring Phil and Chester Thompson, and the show's closing number Take Me Home, during which Phil is clearly emotional given that the tour has come to an end. This tour will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the first time I saw a Phil Collins concert in person, at The Capital Centre Arena in Landover, Maryland. (Check out the My Concerts page for a complete listing of all of my PC shows along with EVERY OTHER concert that I've ever attended.) A five-star tour and a five-star show both at The Capital Centre Arena and Madison Square Garden. (As a personal note: I was in my senior year of high school at the time of this concert, and after recording this concert on VHS tape, I would watch the opening number, Hand In Hand, EVERY SINGLE DAY before heading off to school. I did this for the remainder of my senior year, which lasted until June of 1991. This version of this song is just THAT GOOD!) Complete track listing HERE. ![]()

Westwood One Radio Networks Records Recorded live at The La Scala Theatre, London - 6 November 2002 Original Airdate - Weekend of 7/8 June 2008 pre-FM Single Compact Disc Doug Ingold hosts an intimate performance at the very same theatre where Phil performed as a boy in The Beatles film A HARD DAY'S NIGHT. Taken from the BBC archives, the show contains ten songs from that night along with commercial spots. This appears to be the only pre-FM source from this tour. Incomplete capture. BBC Transcription Services Records # CN 4114/S (151871-S / 151869-S) Recorded live at unknown venues on unknown dates Original Airdate - Unknown Month/Day 1983 pre-FM Single Vinyl LP A rare item from the BBC archives, this listing has a lot of information that is incorrect or missing. The single LP, as listed on eBay, includes (at least) one side of live Dire Straits material that was recorded, according to the hand written notes on the sleeve, on 17 May 1983 in Texas. The problem with this information is that Dire Straits did not play any U.S. dates in 1983. They DID however play four nights in four cities in Texas on the 1985 BROTHERS IN ARMS TOUR, on August 14-17 1985 in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston respectively. So perhaps the recording is from one of those shows. That said, IF the LP was released in 1983, it couldn't contain music from a 1985 tour. One can assume given the printed date of this LP that the Phil Collins material was therefore recorded during his first solo tour, but there is simply no way for me to know wihtout listening to the album, The LP MAY also include interview material as well. (The title "Rock Profile" seems to indicate that interview segments may be present.) The LP also seems to indicate that there are at least two LPs that were originally included, given that each side reads as Side 1 of 2. Unfortunately, no Cue Sheet or other information was provided in the eBay listing for this item, and as the Seller was asking the outrageous price of $249, I did not purchase it. All in all, a mess to figure out, but one thing is certain... this is a pre-FM source of a Phil Collins show of some sort. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Inner View Records (Series #23, Show #7) Unknown recording date Original Airdate - Unknown Month/Day 1982 pre-FM Single Vinyl LP Jim Ladd, who was also the host of the above listed Captured Live! #CL-1684 A-D concert radio program, hosts an interview special focusing on Phil's career and his latest (at that time) album HELLO, I MUST BE GOING. While the copyright on the LP states 1976 as seen in the scans below, this program was definitely produced in late 1982, as Ladd clearly focuses most of his questions on Side One about Phil's second album. (HELLO, I MUST BE GOING was released on 5 November 1982, therefore, this special could not have been recorded too far prior to that. In addition, Ladd hosted Innerview, an hour-long nationally syndicated interview program, from 1974 until 1984.) Phil is present in the room with Ladd, and the two have a lengthy conversation about the record, with details about several songs revealed. Side Two focuses on Phil's time with Genesis, and includes the most detailed explanation I've ever heard about the meaning behind the title of the song Abacab. Tracks include I Don't Care Anymore, Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away, In The Air Tonight, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Follow You, Follow Me, Abacab and Misunderstanding. (As a side note, Jim Ladd served as the inspiration for the 2002 Tom Petty album THE LAST DJ and its title track, and - like Phil - has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.) Great, rare item from my personal collection. Complete track listing HERE. ![]() ![]() ![]()
Baktabak Records (BAK 2020) Limited Edition Vinyl Recorded November 1982 pre-FM Single Vinyl LP An unidentified interviewer meets with Phil and discusses his life, working with Robert Plant, Frida and Clapton, drumming and Phil's latest release HELLO, I MUST BE GOING. The basis for listing the recording date as sometime in November 1982 is based on two main statements on Side 1. The first is when Phil says: "I'm thirty-one now..." (having been born in January of 1951 puts the current year at 1982) and the second is when Phil says: "The album came in at number two today... It's the first week..." As mentioned above, HELLO, I MUST BE GOING was released on 5 November of 1982, therefore, this interview was likely recorded within a few weeks of its release. (Note that the image on Side 2 of the LP is clearly from later in Phil's career... possibly from the '85 NO JACKET REQUIRED Tour or the '86 INVISIBLE TOUCH Tour.) It's a fascinating interview with lots of material that focuses heavily on HELLO I MUST BE GOING. As with many of the Baktabak interviews, this recording starts and ends rather abruptly, especially at the end of Side 1, which cuts off in mid-question but does pick up in the same spot at the start of Side 2. D.I.R. Broadcasting Records Unknown recording date Original Airdate - Week of 21 February 1983 pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP (Side 6 is blank) Lisa Robinson meets with and chronicles the careers of Phil Collins and Steve Winwood separately and discusses their lives and music. The recording definitely sounds as if Robinson is in the same room at the same time with the artists. Phil discusses his time with Genesis, playing with Robert Plant, and his painful divorce - which led to his monumental first solo album, FACE VALUE. The show contains studio tracks from several of Phil's and Steve's albums including No Reply At All, In The Air Tonight and I Don't Care Anymore along with While You See A Chance, Arc Of A Diver and Gimmie Some Lovin'. There are no commercial blocks on these LPs. Phil's portion of the show is contained on Sides 1 & 2, while Winwood's interview takes up Sides 3-5. A rare and hard to find gem. Atlantic Records (ST-PR-759A/B-SP) Exclusive Candid Interview - Limited Edition Vinyl Recorded 1985 pre-FM Single Vinyl LP Dan Neer (Host and Interviewer) meets with Phil and discusses his time with Genesis, his first solo album FACE VALUE, and his latest release NO JACKET REQUIRED. The LP was sent to radio stations under the Atlantic Records label, which makes it an "official release", and therefore it is not hard to come by. Many listings for this exact LP still show up on eBay on a regular basis. Side A of this recording features Neer asking questions and Phil answering them. Side B features the answers only, which allowed DJ's to create their own "live interview" as if Phil was right there with them in the studio. The answers on this recording were frequently and heavily reused on dozens of other interview specials, some of which are listed below. I cannot stress this part enough - a vast majority of the interview clips that appeared on future radio specials were taken DIRECTLY from this album. They were spliced into the shows in order to create the sense that Phil was in the room talking to the host. This LP does not contain any commercials or album tracks. From my personal collection. D.I.R. Broadcasting Records Unknown recording date Original Airdate - Week of 16 July 1988 pre-FM Quadruple Vinyl LP This set contains a four hour weekly radio show featuring host Scott Muni, with special guest Phil Collins and call-in guest Jimmy Page. The Phil Collins interview segments were pre-recorded and occurred backstage at the Royal Albert Hall on the night of and just prior to the recording The Prince's Trust Rock Concert. Collins discusses his upcoming film and soundtrack, BUSTER, recording with George Harrison early in his post-Beatles career on ALL THINGS MUST PASS, appearing at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert, as well as his time working with the Prince's Trust. Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page also calls in and discusses his latest release (at the time) OUTRIDER, playing with Jason Bonham and an upcoming tour. Muni plays tracks from various artists, has fellow disc jockeys call in, and provides historical facts about the artists. Of note is the fact that the end of Side D contains an End Credits sequence which was designed to be played by stations not wishing to broadcast the entire four hour show. However, stations that did so had to broadcast the remaining two hours at a later time in order to account for the Page call in. Contains original commercial blocks. Keep in mind that the booklet is a tri-fold insert, so when you look at the scans, you are looking at all three pages folded flat.) The disc is an official release from Atlantic Records for promotional use, and contains studio tracks from the listed album along with interview segments. Those tracks are Another Day In Paradise, Find A Way To My Heart, Something Happened On The Way To Heaven and I Wish It Would Rain Down. The next set of tracks (02-08) are radio promo spots and the remaining tracks (Track 09-19) contain the interview answers only, and are much more detailed than the profile on the first track. Coupled together, the entire set creates an intimate interview that radio station DJs used to promote the album and imply that Phil was actually sitting in the studio. Orlake Records Unknown recording date Original Airdate - Unknown Month/Day 1990 pre-FM 7" Single Vinyl This 7" single is the oddest of all of the Phil Collins interviews I have come across. The same segment and labels appear on both sides of the vinyl. The brief interview (clocking in at only 6:13) consists of an unidentified man and woman - both with British accents - speaking to Phil in what appears to be a bathroom or water closet! In fact, the interviewer starts off the segment by saying: "Welcome to another edition of In The Toilet With..." As further proof of the surroundings, the interviewer first flushes a toilet, and at the end of the segment, asks Phil to do so as well, and Phil complies. The odd interview then continues to briefly discuss Phil's 1989 release BUT SERIOUSLY.... The recording appears to have been made on a night when Phil won Best Solo Artist and one other trophy for Favorite Track of 1989 by Radio One Listeners for the song Another Day In Paradise, because the interviewer alludes to both awards as Phil having just won them, but it is unclear at which award show the interview was conducted. The vinyl is completely white, as can be seen in the below pic. From my personal collection. Complete track listing HERE. ![]()

There are four tracks on Disc One / Hour 1 of this set. The show contains commercials and studio tracks from several of Phil's albums including Both Sides Of The Story, Everyday and Two Hearts, along with Genesis hits No Son of Mine, In Too Deep and That's All. Westwood One Records Unknown recording date Original Airdate - Week of 10 March 1997 pre-FM Single Compact Disc Cat McEwen (I'm not sure about the spelling of the host as I cannot seem to find any information on her anywhere, and her name is not listed on the Cue Sheet, but she is not the usual Off The Record host, Mary Turner) chronicles Phil's life and his music, (in a rather pompous and overbearing fashion I might add - her "very proper British" accent sounds almost fake!) along with his latest release, DANCE INTO THE LIGHT, and his Big Band outings. Some bits sound as if Phil is in the studio with the host and others are clearly taken from the aforementioned COLLINS ON COLLINS LP. The show contains commercials and studio tracks from several of Phil's albums including Dance Into The Light, Take Me Down and The Times They Are A' Changing, along with Genesis classics such as Abacab, Follow You, Follow Me and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. From my personal collection. Complete track listing HERE. ![]() ![]() ![]()

BeardedFISCH LLC Unknown recording dates Original Airdates - January 2015 - February 2016 Internet Stream Captures Captured directly from nationally syndicated radio personality Redbeard's In The Studio website, host Redbeard interviews Phil in person on three separate occasions to discuss various aspects of his career. The first interview relates to the thirtieth anniversary of Phil's album NO JACKET REQUIRED, and was posted to Redbeard's website on 18 January 2015. The second interview centers on the 2016 reissue (and thirty-fifth anniversary) of Phil's first solo effort FACE VALUE, and was posted on 24 January 2016. The last interview deals with the 2016 reissue of Phil's second LP HELLO, I MUST BE GOING and was posted to the site on 21 February 2016. All three interview specials were ultimately made available to radio stations on compact disc for broadcast, and the interview segments clearly have sections where commercials and studio tracks were inserted. However, as I do not have these discs in my collection, I captured the audio from the website using the Goldwave Audio program. The interviews themselves are very detailed and extensive in terms of topics discussed. From my personal collection. You can listen to the interviews HERE.

London Wavelength Records Unknown recording date Original Airdate - 25 October 1981 pre-FM Single Vinyl LP As I mentioned way at the top of this page, David Dunnington's Complete Guide to Live Genesis Radio Shows (which can be found HERE) is a great source for live Genesis radio shows. As this page has shown, it lacks information on Phil Collins solo shows. What it lacks on the Genesis side of things is a complete listing of the pre-FM radio interview shows which have aired throughout the years. That list is probably much more extensive than the list for the Phil Collins shows which I have detailed above, but I only have about a dozen or so Genesis radio interview shows in my collection. The shows themselves only cover the era in which Phil was the lead vocalist. I will therefore list those here, and I will add to this list as I find more shows. The earliest pre-FM interview special focusing on Genesis that I have in my private collection comes to us courtesy of the B.B.C. Rock Hour Special series. Host Richard Skinner interviews Phil, Mike and Tony and plays tracks from their 1981 album ABACAB. Tracks include Another Record, No Reply At All, Like It Or Not and Me And Sarah Jane among others. Great, rare item. From my personal collection. Complete track listing HERE. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Many listings for this exact LP still show up on eBay on a regular basis. Side A of this recording features the Neer asking questions and the boys answering them.
